Design Your Piece

Find a design that inspires you. If you plan on drawing on your piece, decide whether you want a light background or a dark background. This will save you some time when you start painting. With a light background, we recommend you do your background first so that you don’t need to paint around your designs.

Sketch Your Design

Sketch lightly because heavy lead from pencils can cause issues in the kiln. If you make a mistake, just erase it. Any left over lead will disappear in the kiln.

Painting Your Piece

Always start with your light colors first and work your way towards the darker ones. Black should always be last. Working light to black will help cover any mistakes. Dark colors can cover light ones but not the other way around.

Coats of Paint

For the best results, do three coats for each color. The paint doesn’t take long to dry. If you can touch it and no paint comes off your hands, you can do your next coat. It’s okay to do one or two coats, but you’ll see the white underneath and brush strokes.

Rinsing Your Brush

Only rinse your brush when you’re done with a color and dry it on a paper towel before dipping into paint again. When the paints are watered down, colors don’t come out as vibrant.

Clean Up Process

Clean up is easy. Use a wet rag to wipe off any paints on surfaces. When your item(s) are dry, wrap it back in the paper it came in. Don’t forget to pack and return any paints or brushes to get your rental deposits back.
